“Experience Oblige”

I’ve been waiting all my life - for this moment to arrive
A kind of wisdom settling down - as recognition finds its way
They say experience fortify your soul to let you tell
Up and down and right from wrong
The world and me - we’ve come a long long way
Now it’s time for us to know

 Something’s lurking in the dark
A kind of doubt turns up ahead
Like the stir from the shark
And soon the water turns all red

I’ve been waiting all my life - to see if reason would prevail
Expecting enlightenment - to spread its seeds around
 Hoping lessons learned to full
We were urged to carry on - advancing progress meant for all
But how many times did we say - never - never again

I… I’ve tried to understand the way things go
I… I realize, the past won’t let us know

What do you know?  I know that all we knew must go
What do you see?  I see a world that’s on it’s knees
What do you feel?  Please don’t ask me to get real
What have you done?  It’s beyond the power of one

We’ve been hiding all our lives - from the coldness of the truth
We have fought to reach our selfish goals - abandoning the common good
Everyone must see - no selective blindness
Everyone must know - no denying the past
Everyone must realize - no more turning back
It can’t go on - can’t go on

I… I’ve tried to understand the way things go
I… I realize, the past won’t let us know
I… I’ve given in - abandoned my illusions
I… I’ve learned by now - they were just delusions
